According to the many web experts, Google’s latest algorithm updates with their multiple versions (Penguin, Panda, Hummingbird, Narwhal) will spell the end for the electronic press release. The press release is dead!
But there is an alternative view. Perhaps Google is secretly in love with all things to do with credible and relevant news. But why I hear you ask!
Google loves PR!
Google recently filed a patent that details how brand mentions and ‘implied links’ can contribute to ranking authority. This is an interesting development and certainly a very curious one given the demise of online PR distribution sites like prlog, sourcewire etc. To survive, most have had to completely re-invent the services that they offer.
What’s an Implied Link?
Let’s say the Financial Times posts an article online about your company but doesn’t link to you (this happens a lot). No problem you are probably thinking! However, using contextual analysis, Google gives you credit for this ‘implied link’ although no link is actually included in the article. This is the very nature of PR which is really just about “getting the word out” rather than focusing on inbound links.
The Truth
Google hates press releases that exist solely for the sake of SEO. Press releases that are stuffed with keywords and anchor text links which are then posted on free and low-cost press release sites will only get you into trouble online. However, this is not to say that Google doesn’t like media attention. Unique articles which are written by credible journalists, based on press releases issued over reputable press release sites, can still generate useful traction online.
